Patrick Procktor is viewed as one of the outstanding British artists of his generation. He declares himself as the enfant terrible of the 1960’s art world, known as ‘the one who drew Joe Orton in his socks’. He entered the Slade School of Art in 1958 and formed friendships with many of the leading art world figures of his day, such as Cecil Beaton, Keith Vaughan and David Hockney.

His first exhibition was at The Redfern Gallery in 1963 and the following year he exhibited in his first ‘New Generation’ show at the Whitechapel Gallery, selected by Bryan Robertson. Since then, he has had many shows at The Redfern Gallery, London and in Venice, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan.

Procktors paintings are celebrated for the wit, lightness of touch and graphic sensibility. His distinctive portraits, with their strangely etiolated figures, demonstrate a sophisticated expressionism combined with a brilliant use of colour and surface. He has travelled widely and produced paintings, watercolours and prints of China, Venice, America and India. He has also worked and travelled in Russia, Japan and Egypt.

In 1984 he was commissioned to paint a reredos for the St John the Baptist’s chapel in Chichester cathedral. In 1996 he was elected a Royal Academician.
