Josef was born in Poland and came over to Glasgow where he met Jankel Adler who introduced him to contemporary Scottish artists. He then moved to Wales where having been inspired by the mining communities, he made his home for around 20 years. He left Wales and moved to London where he started his long association with The Curwen Studio in 1959.
In 1951 he was commissioned to do a mural for the Festival of Britain exhibition. In 1962 he was awarded a gold medal for services to Welsh Art. In 1981 he was created OBE and in 1990 he was elected to the Royal Academy.
His work is widely collected by Museums around the world.
